As we move through our Matching Grant Fundraiser, we want to open a deeper conversation about the work this support is nurturing, beginning with our Food Sovereignty projects.
Food sovereignty is the simple but powerful understanding that communities should guide their own nourishment. It’s not only about having food available, it’s about having a say in how that food is grown, shared, prepared, and protected.
It restores the relationship between people, land, and culture by placing decision‑making back into the hands of the community. When we talk about food sovereignty, we’re talking about dignity, agency, and the right to shape the systems that sustain life. It is nourishment rooted in relationships.
The Fountain is supporting Food Sovereignty work in several regions. In the Black Hills, we are walking alongside the Oglala Sioux Tribe on Pine Ridge through a community food garden. In Colombia, we are supporting a food project with the Kaggaba people.
We also have a grant in progress with the Orinte Ezza Elders, through the Yusuf Offia Foundation, to strengthen their food sovereignty efforts in Nigeria.
Food sovereignty carries a depth that can’t be fully expressed in a short message. On Patreon, we’ll be offering a deeper look at what it means and how these programs are supporting community‑led nourishment and resilience.
