"We spend January 1st walking through our lives, room by room, drawing up a list of work to be done, cracks to be patched. Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives ... not looking for flaws but for potential." ~ Ellen Goodman

"No matter how long the winter, spring is sure to follow." ~Proverb

Dear systems thinkers,

New years are magical: everything seems possible, hopes for the world are renewed, we resolve to start new projects shake the dust from abandoned ones; we also reflect on what the ending year meant  to us: we offer gratitude for the good things in our lives, may honour our pain for the people and things we lost and recharge our connection to ourselves, each other and the world by taking a systemic view and revisit the old good questions:
  • How did the world as we know emerge?
  • What is life?
  • Who are we?
  • What is emerging?
  • How should we live our lives so they reflect those answers?
As we may meet with family or friends, in person or virtually and remember to stay safe, what are the resolutions for this new round around the sun?

Maybe it is to buy less and share more?
Maybe is to walk more and sit less?
Maybe is to eat healthier, local, and seasonal whole foods?
Maybe is to learn more about systems and the possible changes and solutions?
Maybe is to give more and express more gratitude for the amazing world we have?

Here at the Capra Course, we are resolved to continue offering quality lectures, materials, and support and to help you connect with like-minded individuals and groups.

Wishing you a 2022 full of gratitude, creativity, community, and connection

Fwd: MEMO: Sunrise 2.0

Sunrise Movement Logo

SUNRISE 2.0 MEMO

Why do we need Sunrise 2.0?

The Sunrise Movement has achieved things in our first five years that were supposed to be impossible. In the next ten years, we're gonna need to achieve more supposedly "impossible" things — because everything we love depends on it.

As 2021 comes to a close, we've won more for climate justice than has ever been won in the United States. From organizing hundreds of miles long marches to hunger strikes and mass mobilizations across the country, young people are leading us into an even fiercer era of the fight for the Green New Deal.

But we're painfully aware that all we have won will not be enough, and we know that our movement will need to transform in order to build the power we need to WIN a real Green New Deal.

What are some things that are changing in Sunrise 2.0?

It may seem like the oil and gas industry still controls the purse strings — and the state of climate policy — on Capitol Hill. But when we reflect on where we started and how far we've come, it's clear: Climate change is finally a top issue in American politics. And the Green New Deal is now a household name — a transformative policy framework that has inspired thousands of activists across the country to organize.

The challenge ahead of us now is to actually pass the Green New Deal and the policies we need to stop and possibly reverse climate change. And to win, we need a different strategy, story, structure, and culture at Sunrise.

How are you developing Sunrise 2.0?

This reinvention of Sunrise's DNA goes through a process called "frontloading" which gathers learnings from the movement to create a new foundation. The frontloading team truly looks like the movement we know we need to build if we're going to win: majority BIPOC, majority working class, from small towns as well as big cities. The youngest member is 16! Since last fall, they have been working to develop a new draft of the DNA that they believe will serve Sunrise well in the next four to five years.

Part of this new DNA includes supporting our local hubs to fight for Green New Deal legislation on the state and local levels to help lay the groundwork for winning at the federal level in the years to come. Marriage equality, marijuana legalization, and raise the minimum wage movements have adopted the same kind of state-to-federal strategy.

Both staff and volunteers are revising the plan and going through a feedback process with the movement. Sunrise members will vote on whether to ratify the Sunrise 2.0 next year. While strategy and structure may be changing, Sunrise 2.0 will continue advocating for the Green New Deal, electing more GND champions, and building on the goal of passing a climate agenda that meets the moment of the climate crisis.

How can I help usher in Sunrise 2.0?

In January, movement leaders will sit down and analyze the budget, our organizational capacity, and the frontloading plan. They'll have to make tough decisions about what Sunrise can and cannot take on and how bold and ambitious we can be.

Simply put: How much money we raise at the end of this year will determine how much we can take on. That's why supporters like you, giving what you can to invest in this work, are so important.

In solidarity,

All of us at Sunrise

Fwd: Who’s pulling the strings? The Monopoly behind the insanity…

If you're wondering how the entire media is being controlled… blocking all "c0v!d" emails

And why everyone seems to be "falling into place" instead of speaking up about the utter nonsense that's happening around us…

And if you're completely confused as to why it's been so easy for "the powers that be" to take away our freedoms and our rights…

Then you need to watch this video that exposes exactly WHO'S PULLING THE STRINGS.

This isn't a conspiracy theory. It's not even a mystery. Anyone can do the research and see the truth for themselves…

Please, watch this video. Then, share it…

Because it explains so much about where we are today, and unless something major changes?

Things are only going to get worse in the future.

To your health and freedom,

joyous Christmas in whatever way it holds Gratitude

Wishing everyone a joyous Christmas in whatever way it holds meaning. There will be many families who feel the happiness of a special present under the tree. Let us take a moment to send our love to the many who awaken without someone who mattered. To those who suffer alone. To those who wish to be free who are not.

There is a great story for me in this picture. It is the joy of remembering the gifts we forgot we had. Gratitude is that spark in our heart that reminds us. Many of us live the cliche of not knowing what we have until we lose it. It is easy to be complacent and take so much for granted. In an instant we are left wishing we had said this or that. We need not wait to ignite our awareness of the countless blessings of our life. The whispers of our soul can be heard while we savor this feast deeply.

However, our attention must rest on what we have rather than what we don't. Gratitude for the many places in ourselves that we can claim with appreciation. We are an extraordinary mosaic with many parts that glisten with love. We must allow ourselves to remember these. Those we may see today share the same truth. Let us pause and steep in our remembrance of the gift they are in our lives. Share this voice.

We can bring the light of noticing all that we are and have in our life. It requires us to simply write a daily story of remembering. Whether we are connecting through a virtual window or across the room, we can touch each moment with gratitude. This tree of life has so many gifts underneath it. It is my deepest wish that each of us can see all that matters. For a time today, allow your disappointments to be suspended.

May the open arms of our heart embrace the miracles of this day.

They are unfolding in every moment.

Fwd: We believe in the power of storytelling.

Our beliefs, our institutions, and our systems are all rooted in stories.

The concepts of human rights, law, economics, statehood, rely on our collective agreement that they're true and important. It's time we recognized the power of our collective imagination — our power to reshape societies using our capacity to imagine new worlds into existence.

Today, we face a crisis of imagination.

We can't imagine a world without capitalism. Without the commodification of nearly every facet of our lives. It's not that we lack the facts to convince us of the errors of these structures. It's that we haven't been able to see something beyond them.

We are in dire need of new stories.

To move forward, we must pour our energy into imagining new worlds. A world where our food system is designed to feed people, not accumulate capital. Where we commune with Earth, not extract from it. One where those who grow our food are valued, not exploited.

We see food sovereignty as a story that can unite us in radical re-imagination.

Through storytelling, building collective understanding, and driving resources to peasant and Indigenous groups actively leading us to food sovereignty, we move closer towards this radical vision.
A Growing Culture was founded to celebrate the culture in agriculture — to center the peasant and Indigenous voices who are actively reimagining our food system.

The missing piece is not more data to prove what farming practices feed the world.
The missing piece is our ability to see how interconnected we all are.
How our liberation is tied to those growing food thousands of miles away.

Food sovereignty is a movement rooted in that interconnection.
Our storytelling centers the root causes of injustice in our food system and invites wider audiences to recognize our shared struggle for liberation.

Our platforms and our stories are always open-source, to be shared and circulated for the growth of the food sovereignty movement.

You can easily access these stories through our Food Sovereignty 101 guide.
