View this email in your browser
Calling all Capra Course alumni in Florida!

Join an ever-emerging collaborative learning and regenerative leadership process, the 5th living systems experiment in Florida.

Since February 2020, a group of Floridians, allies and friends have grown into The Florida Network. They have taken the Capra Course together, are practicing biomimicry in a place-based way and enjoying being a living system becoming conscious of itself.

With 'nodes' manifesting around the Florida peninsula, we are getting better at engaging as a network networking with networks. Conscious and aware.

If you'd like to be part of the fun, jump in, as we embrace local, regional and state governance, applying systems theories to cities, counties and the Florida peninsula – with many partners.

Here's how:
  • Retake the Capra Course this Spring as an alum (email Silvia at - admin@capracourse.net to receive the 50% discount code for registering)
  • Join the Spring 2023 Florida Study Group each Friday, beginning February 17 from 3:30-5PM on Zoom, as we apply the lessons to our communities.
  • Join their weekly Zoom gathering - The Florida Network - Mondays from 5-6:30 PM ET. All are welcome!

As promised, Fritjof has produced an update video and suggested reading list for the alumni!

Recommendations for Further Reading

Resources mentioned in Fritjof's talk

Stefano Mancuso, The Revolutionary Genius of Plants, Atria Books, 2017.

The author, a botanist at the University of Florence, discusses his amazing research on what he calls the "neurobiology" of plants. It reveals a surprisingly sophisticated ability of plants to innovate, to remember, and to learn, which is fully consistent with the Santiago theory of cognition.

Merlin Sheldrake, Entangled Life, The Bodley Head, 2020.

This is the most detailed and most fascinating popular science book about fungi. The author discusses the subject from a systemic perspective, documenting, again and again, the fundamental interconnectedness of the community of life. taking the reader into a magical world, as you  would expect from an author called "Merlin."

Deep Carbon Observatory, "Life in Deep Earth Totals 15 to 23 Billion Tonnes of Carbon — Hundreds of Times More than Humans" (2018)
https://deepcarbon.net/life-deep-earth-totals-15-23-billion-tonnes-carbon

The technical report of the sensational discovery of a vast subterranean biosphere by a multidisciplinary team of 1,200 scientists from 52 countries.

Webb's First Images (2022)

A gallery of the first brilliant images transmitted by the James Webb Space telescope, including captions for each image.

David Korten, "Ecological Civilization:
From Emergency to Emergence" (2021)

In this article, David Korten, political activist and leading critic of economic globalization, presents a summary of his life's work, including a deep and eloquent critique of economists' obsession with unlimited economic growth and with the making of money as the defining goal of society, the historical context of this obsession, a concise summary of the rise of imperialism, and an outline of the essential features of an alternative ecological civilization.

Jean-Francois Bastin, Yelena Finegold, Claude Garcia, Danilo Mollicone, Marcelo Rezende, Devin Routh, Constantin M. Zohner, Thomas W. Crowther, "The global tree restoration potential," Science, 2019; 365 (6448): 76 DOI: 10.1126/science.aax0848

The scientific report of the first authoritative study on global tree restoration, published by the Crowther Lab in 2019, which shows conclusively that planting billions of trees across the world is by far the most effective and cheapest way to tackle the climate crisis.

TreeSisters (https://treesisters.org)

Website of the NGO TreeSisters, founded by Clare Dubois and Bernadette Ryder, which has so far planted over 27 million trees (at an average cost of 40¢ per tree) across 12 tropical locations.

Additional Resources

Andreas Weber, Matter & Desire, Chelsea Green, 2014

The author, a former student of Francisco Varela, is thoroughly familiar with the systems' view of life. In this beautifully written book, he identifies the biological roots of love as a longing for attachment and as an experience of intense aliveness. Interestingly, this feeling of intense aliveness has also been associated with spiritual experience.

Jeremy Lent, The Patterning Instinct, Prometheus, 2017.

The author of this fascinating interdisciplinary historical narrative introduces a new perspective, which he calls "cognitive history." Instead of the traditional approach of associating the direction of history, ultimately, with material causes — geography, economy, technology, and the like — he argues that different cultures construct core metaphors to make meaning out of their world and that these metaphors forge the values that drive people's actions.

Ibram Kendi, How to Be an Antiracist, One World, 2019.

The award-winning author, professor of history and international relations, and antiracist activist provides a brilliant analysis of the nature and origin of racist ideas, and of the powerful alternative of antiracism.

Felix Flicker, The Magick of Matter, Profile Books, 2022

The physical phenomena discussed in this delightful book are not those involving subatomic particles or black holes, but those of the material world of our everyday experience — the phenomena explored in condensed matter physics, which can be just as magical. Throughout the book, the author playfully  (and skillfully!) uses traditional terms of magic from the popular fantasy and science fiction literature which serves as a rich source of metaphors.

Floyd Byars, Bernt Capra, Fritjof Capra, Mindwalk: The Screenplay,
Brass Tacks Press, 2021

The complete Screenplay of Mindwalk, the cult classic created and directed by Fritjof's brother, Bernt Capra; includes Fritjof's scene-by-scene scientific commentary.

Fritjof Capra, Patterns of Connection, High Road Books,
University of New Mexico Press, 2021

A collection of Fritjof's essays, many of them appearing in print for the first time, reflecting the evolution of his thinking during five decades, as well as the history of several movements for social change — from the counterculture of the 1960s to the New Age movement of the 1970s, the emergence of Green politics in the 1980s, and the rise of the global civil society from the 1990s to the present.

Lies Surrounding USA

Lies Surrounding the Ukraine War

Extreme Censorship Is Shaping Reality

Sachs tells Brand that when he grew up, newspapers enjoyed dissing on political figures. But now, “these papers don’t do anything but repeat the lies. And it’s extremely strange to me.”5 Due to his experience, Sachs knows a lot of reporters, and they actually tell him that they’re unable to report freely:6

“They tell me privately, ‘Yeah, what you’re saying is right, but our editor is not so interested in it’ … Corporate ownership, yes, it’s definitely part of it. But the complete collapse of professionalism in journalism in these mainstream media — not everywhere, because there are some really brave people out there — but in, what we call the mainstream, it's pathetic and very dangerous.”

Even as the war grows increasingly dangerous, there is no open discussion — only a one-sided dictate that’s spread over the airwaves. Sachs explained:7

“We’re deep into a war that is escalating and we can’t even have a decent discussion about what the sources of this war are and how to end it. I’ve had the experience. I wrote for one project syndicate for 20 years. I was their most-published writer. But they wouldn’t print the pieces that I wrote that were contrary to the official line about this war. It was pretty amazing to me after 20 years. I couldn’t post a piece. And that’s not good, in my view.”

What does this level of censorship and control suggest? The clues can be found in our heavily militarized government, which is the overarching theme across party lines:8

“I’ve been involved with dozens of governments across the world for 40 years now. Basically, the neocons took over U.S. foreign policy 30 years ago. And it hasn’t really mattered whether it’s democrats or republicans … the mainstream of our political system in both parties is militarized, and our foreign policy is largely based on secrecy. So we don’t even see what our government is doing.

Nothing is explained, nothing is debated anymore, and that’s been true for a long time. It’s been true across the administration, so it’s not a partisan thing.”

Fwd: Tired of Political Nonsense? Read This First:

Wow. . . Rafe' which is pronounced as Raffie sees how people are starting to realize it's disinformation

What Makes a Leader "True" & "Wise"?

Good morning Rafe,

I hope you're well!

Now, not to get political by any sense…

But as the US is getting ready for midterm elections this month…

It's stirring up a lot of fear in the consiousness fields once more regarding political violence and 'disinformation.'

(Some even dubbed Elon Musk buying Twitter as a political move to spread 'fake news'.)

But amidst the chaos of pointing fingers and "he-said-she-said"

We do our best to stand at the center, the heart of it all.

We ask: how can you tell between a leader who is true and wise…

And a leader who is not?

It might seem obvious at first, when you pay attention to how one leader treats his "opponent."

But when we look to the Tao Te Ching, which was once a leader's handbook for wisdom and harmony…

We start to see it's not about one leader's relationship with the "other" leader—

It's about a leader's relationship with the people he serves.

Think about it…

When elections come up, we're conditioned to focus on politicians tearing each other apart to prove who's "best"— like a fight or game.

But where do YOU stand in all that?

How are YOU being served, supported, and guided?

Perhaps Verse 17 of the Tao Te Ching can be a beacon of clarity for us all…

The Wisest Leaders

The wisest leaders among humanity are barely known.
Next comes those who are loved and praised,
next are those whom people fear,
and next after that, those who are despised.

If leaders are not trusting, then trust cannot be placed in them.
But those leaders who are calm, thoughtfully valuing their words,
accomplishing their tasks and settling their matters,
their people will say:
"We did it ourselves naturally!"

So you see, it's not really about what one leader says about the other.

It's about how he or she shows up for the people.

The best leaders are the ones who allow their people to live naturally…

How many politicians are actually doing that though, hmm? 🤔

Going even deeper, our Aquarian Age Edition of The Tao Te Ching also encourages us all

To be the Leaders we want to see in the world.

Maybe that starts with meditating on this verse before you vote,

So you can step into the booth with newfound clarity, confidence, and compassion.

And if you're called to explore all 81 verses and their commentaries for personalized support,

Click here to invite the Tao deeper into your life.

This book has been life-changing for us and our community,

And it's just the beginning of a ripple effect of wisdom for the whole collective!

Thank you for being a part of it with us.

With all our love,
Patchman & Team Spirit 🙏💛✨
Welcome the Tao into Your Life
